5 Password Tips to Keep You Safe

(2 Minute Read)

  • Create a Strong Password

A strong password should contain at least 8 characters and contain upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. Create a passphrase with spacing to create an even stronger password ie Cork For Sam 2024!*

  • Never Reuse a Password or a Variation of an Old Password

Don’t use a previous password or the same password for more than one site.

  • Keep Passwords to Yourself

Never write a password down on a piece of paper. Don’t put your password on a yellow stickie and stick it onto your computer or Laptop. (We see this everyday!) Never give your password to anyone and definitely not to somebody who rings or emails you out of the blue. Also make sure when you are logging into a website, that it is the genuine site, as criminals create fake websites and social media posts to harvest passwords.

  • Log out of Programmes & Websites and Keep Your Computer Locked

Log out of your computer or laptop before leaving it unsupervised. Log out of Programmes, Websites, and Web Browers if they are no longer needed.

  • Use Multi-Factor Authentication where you can

Many systems and websites offer a function to send you a one-time code after your password has been entered correctly. This is called multi-factor authentication (MFA). The unique security code must be entered to gain access after your password is accepted. Use MFA where you can.

Stay safe.
