(2 Minute Read)

If you use your laptop regularly, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria and other nasty things. As well as a health hazard, dirt is unsightly, and it can also cause damage. Dust and debris can accumulate on the inside and outside of your laptop, on your keyboard, and even inside your mouse. This can lead to overheating, damage, and other issues.

So, if you want your laptop to continue running trouble free and to fend off any potential viruses floating around, read on through our 4 steps to keeping your laptop clean.

4 Steps to Keep Your Laptop Clean:

  1. Shut down your laptop and unplug it from the wall. – While this goes without saying, it probably still needs to be stated. Make sure you shut down your laptop correctly and unplug it from the wall. This is to eliminate the possibility of damaging your laptop, as you’ll be later wiping it down with a damp cloth.
  2. Wipe down the screen with a microfibre cloth. – The first step is to wipe down your laptop screen with a damp microfibre cloth. We always recommend using a few drops of a specialised cleaning liquid (alcohol based) on a damp cloth, as it evaporates quickly. At Niamh Barrett Computers we always have a selection of laptop screen cleaners for sale online www.nbcomputers.ie  and instore (063 21527). Don’t ever apply any household cleaning products directly onto your laptop. The liquid could possibly seep into your machine and the harsh chemicals will definitely cause damage.
  3. Clean your Keyboard – We sell anti-bacterial wipes which are ideal for cleaning and disinfecting your keyboard. This is something you should get into the habit of doing on a regular basis. A cotton swab is an ideal way to clean those hard-to-reach places. The keyboard tends to be the dirtiest part of the laptop. The oil from your fingertips often leaves smudge marks behind while crumbs and hair also tend to get wedged under the keys which can cause the keyboard to malfunction. We always do a complimentary clean of the screen and keyboard of all laptops dropped in our Service Centre.
  4. When you need professional help. – Sometimes the vents, fans and ports on your laptop can get clogged with dust. This can cause your laptop to overheat and shut down or malfunction in other ways. Some models of laptops are more susceptible than others and it also depends on the amount of dust and lint floating around. This is usually a job for our Service Centre as often we have to take the laptop apart to properly clean the fan. This is a job we do on a regular basis.
